The summary: an out-of-town rake who organizes a five-day historical fair in the fictional small town of Artesa, California gets his come-uppance… sort of. If you limit yourself to viewing the covers, you will have extracted all of the juice possible from this dry lemon of a novel. It’s a prime example of the saying “three strikes and you are out.” Strike one: Ferris wheel imagery yet there is no carnival content. Strike two: Not one leering photographer to be found anywhere. Strike three: Sleazy covers wrap a timid potboiler that cuts away from the very limited “hot” action before it can get hot and heavy. It’s the kind of stuff that wouldn’t have made even your old maiden aunt blush back in 1966. In an era of actual sleaze novels, this Lancer Books “bait and switch” phony was a particularly cynical exploitation of the customer’s wallet.
